Traditionally practised in eastern cultures, where baby massage is seen as crucial for health and well being, it is now increasingly popular in our western culture. Learning how to massage your baby provides you with a positive way of interacting and relaxing with your baby, whilst promoting their health and well-being. Class Content Each week we focus on a different area of the body learning new strokes as well as recapping those from previous sessions. By the end of the 4 week course you will be confident in massaging all areas and able to give your baby a full body massage. There is time towards the end for refreshments and a chat giving plenty of opportunity for you and your baby to make friends. Benefits for Baby There are a number of physical and emotional benefits for the baby, these include: Promotes fuller and deeper breathing. Stimulates circulation (by increasing blood flow which ensures oxygen and nutrients reach baby’s cells). Stimulates and strengthens immune system. Encourages muscular co-ordination and joint flexibility. Improves appearance and texture of skin. Increases endorphins which help to reduce pain, tension and promote well being. Stimulates nervous system through stimulation of skin. Soothes and comforts while promoting sensory awareness. Reduces tension and irritability enhancing relaxation and sleep. Teaches babies about their bodies. Helps parent-baby bonding. Enhances communication skills (as mother is talking/singing). Demonstrates unconditional love to baby. Benefits for Parent There are a number of physical and emotional benefits for the parent, these include: Promotes confidence of parent in handling the baby. Increases parent’s ability to relax. Provides a special time to enjoy a mutually rewarding activity. Helps mothers suffering from postnatal depression (due to the release of Oxytocin, the feel good hormone). It’s a fun and pleasurable experience. Frequently Asked Questions Where are the classes held? Classes are usually held in my own home in Warfield. Being in a homely environments means you and your baby can feel more relaxed and comfortable. What do I need to bring? Anything you might need for your baby such as changing, feeding equipment. Also ensure you wear comfortable clothing as you will be spending time of the floor with your baby. How old does my baby have to be to attend? Once you and your baby have had your 6 week check and you feel ready you can attend. Classes are from 6 weeks to mobile. What if my baby needs a feed or needs changing during the class? The classes are relaxed and flexible, and you will feel free to attend to your baby’s needs as required. Baby massage is very much as baby led activity, this means you look are in constant communication with your baby and reacting to the cues and signals they are giving. You will receive handouts so that you can practice the strokes at home. I have a few friends with babies can we form our own baby massage class? Yes I am happy to teach small groups with a minimum number of three people. I will try to find dates and times that suit the group and would usually teach small group in my own home in Warfield. How much does it cost? The cost is £36 for the 4 week course and includes, oil, handouts and refreshments. Payment is due upfront to secure your place.
